This little animal almost looks like it's straight out of a sci-fi movie, and its unique appearance makes it fun to learn how to draw an axolotl yourself.

How to Draw An Axolotl
Step 1
In this first step of our guide to drawing an axolotl, we'll start with the animal's head and snout. First, start with two small, solid black oval shapes.
These form the large pupils of the eyes and can then surround them with a circular outline.
Next, we'll use a curved line for the top of the mouth and another smaller line for the base of the mouth.
After drawing it, you can start with the outline of the head, which you can draw with a curved line.
The axolotl's head is rather squat and thick, attached to an almost nonexistent neck. Once these aspects are completed, you can move on to step 2!
Step 2
For this second part of the axolotl drawing, we'll add the front legs to the animal. Legs are fairly short with pointed, webbed toes.
Also, they attach to the side so loosely that it looks like it's floating in the water.
After drawing the legs as they appear in the reference image, you can add a curved line for the gill on the side of the body.
Step 3
The axolotl has a large, thick tail that it uses to propel itself through the water. We will draw this tail for this third part of our how-to-draw an axolotl guide.
First, use a smaller curved line for the base of the tail where it will attach to the body. Then, draw a dot at the end with another, more curved and slightly wavy line for the tail.
Step 4
In this fourth step, we will add quite a bit to the axolotl drawing, so let's take it slow and slow!
First, draw another leg for the front of the axolotl. This leg looks very similar to the other front leg and fills the space left near the body's base and the back leg.
Then you can draw another shorter hind leg for the axolotl and then draw a curved line for the animal's back.
Finally, add more curved lines with smaller shapes for the first few fins on the head. In the next step, we will add some final details before coloring!
Step 5
You'll finalize some details in this step of our guide to drawing an axolotl.
One of the axolotl's most distinctive features is its many unusual fins growing from its head and body. You've already drawn some of these protrusions in this guide.
In this step, we will draw the rest, details, and finishing touches.
Some gaps remain in the axolotl's head and upper back, and we will fill in these species with some vine-like fins.
As with the previous examples of these fins, they are drawn with a few curved strokes from which many small rounded shapes emerge.
Once these have been drawn, you will have completed all the details in this guide! Before proceeding to the last step, you can also add some personal details and elements to complete it.
You could draw a background to show the environment the axolotl is swimming in, and that would be a great opportunity to draw other of your favorite aquatic creatures alongside it!
Step 6
In this final step of our guide, we will finalize your axolotl drawing. The axolotl comes in many different and amazing color combinations and shades, giving you much freedom in coloring your drawing.
In our reference image, we've chosen a beautiful soft pink color, but that's just one option you can choose.
You can make it as colorful or muted as you like, and once you've decided on the colors, you have to decide what artistic media to use to achieve the colors.
For example, you can use acrylic paints or colored pencils for lighter tones, while colored pencils and watercolors suit softer, more muted colors.
