ACE Pre-Academic Classroom
The Pre-Academic Classroom at the Autism Centre for Excellence (ACE), established in 2018, supports children with special needs in transitioning to mainstream education in a structured environment Since its commencement, the Pre-Academic Classroom has effectively transitioned four children into inclusive educational settings, showcasing its success in preparing students for mainstream integration.
We offer a modified curriculum tailored to each student’s needs and abilities through their Individualized Educational Plan along with group classes where we implement class 2 to 3 CBSE-based textbooks of subjects Math, English, GK, Phonics, and EVS.
Core Areas of Focus:
1. The pre-academic classroom focuses on developing the fundamental skills required for academic and social success in a mainstream environment. These include language and communication skills, basic literacy and numeracy, social skills, and motor skills for daily living activities. By targeting these foundational areas, the Pre-Academic Classroom ensures that students are better prepared to meet the demands of a more inclusive educational setting. The classroom environment is designed to gradually increase student’s independence, encouraging them to take ownership of their learning, manage transitions, and participate actively in classroom activities. Through structured activities, scaffolding, and positive reinforcement, our students learn to manage tasks independently and gain confidence in their abilities.
2. In a group setting, our students learn to interact with peers, develop friendships, and understand social norms. This is particularly important for children with special needs, who may struggle with social skills. Activities are designed to promote cooperation, turn-taking, sharing, and empathy which help students build relationships and improve their social confidence, which is crucial for their overall development and future success.
3. The skills and experiences gained in the Pre-Academic Classroom prepare our students for the expectations and routines of a mainstream classroom. Students learn how to follow instructions, work in groups, participate in classroom discussions, and handle transitions smoothly. This preparation significantly enhances their readiness for mainstream education and increases their chances of successful integration.
4. The classroom environment also emphasizes emotional regulation, self-awareness, and positive behavioral support. Our students learn to recognize and manage their emotions, develop coping strategies, and navigate social situations more effectively. This focus on emotional and behavioral development is critical for building resilience and preparing students for future challenges.
With a team of dedicated educators, including a lead teacher and shadow teachers, the classroom ensures that each student receives consistent support. Shadow teachers provide individualized attention and assistance, helping students stay engaged and adapt to the classroom environment. This close monitoring allows for timely adjustments in teaching strategies and interventions, ensuring optimal learning outcomes.
The Pre-Academic Classroom at ACE is vital for fostering a positive and successful transition for students with special needs into mainstream education. By providing a supportive, adaptive, and inclusive environment, it has empowered students to develop the skills, confidence, and readiness required to succeed in a more typical classroom setting.
